Phillip Osman and Swindon College students are celebrating after being awarded a silver medal at the 2006 Malvern Spring Gardening Show.
Phillip and a team of Swindon College students designed and built the Garden of Celebration, which will be dismantled and re-planted at the Prospect Hospice in Wroughton once the show is over.
The Garden of Celebration features a shallow mosaic pond, the tiles for which have been rolled, cut, designed and hand-painted by patients, relatives, volunteers and staff during an art therapy project at the Prospect Hospice.
The team’s aim was to create a garden where patients, staff and visitors could enjoy a moment of solitude or reflection as well as spend time with friends and family. When back at the hospice, the garden will be set in a natural bowl within the grounds in woodland surroundings. It will contain seating, pathways, and planting to reflect its woodland setting.
This is the second year running that Phillip has won a medal at the RHS Malvern Show, which is organised by the Royal Horticultural Society and the Three Counties Agricultural Society.
“I was thrilled to win a bronze last year, especially as I was so new to the profession,” says Phillip. “To win a silver medal this year is just terrific. It’s also a fantastic achievement for the students, and it’s a credit to the local businesses and the wider community who have supported us and made it a genuine community project.”
Phillip was inspired to design a garden for the hospice because of the care shown to his father when he was at a hospice in Cardiff. He also wanted to make use of the garden once the Malvern show finishes, on Sunday May 14.
He said: “Most of these show gardens end up in a skip, which is a phenomenal waste of resources, so we decided to offer it a permanent home and embrace the recycling ethos in a big way.”
